Two funded MS student positions at Utah State University

Two funded MS student positions at Utah State University

Discipline Areas: Fire and Forest Ecology

Research Topic: Fire severity as a driver of post-fire regeneration in forests

Start Date: May 2021 (ideally); possibly August 2021

Compensation: 2 years of $18,000 annual stipend

plus benefits (tuition, fees, and insurance)

Utah State University's Department of Wildland Resources seeks 2 MS students to work on projects focused on natural and planted post-fire tree regeneration.

Each student will focus on one of two main topics:

 1) How well do fire severity and elevation predict post-fire vegetation trajectories? We are interested in how well fire severity predicts post-fire vegetation trajectories across forest types and elevation. We will establish plots in historical fire footprints in the Southwest and measure natural tree regeneration for this project. Advisor: Dr. Larissa Yocom (https://t.co/siDH0gT4VD).

2) How does fire severity influence the survival and establishment of nursery-grown aspen seedlings? In this study, we will assess (i) whether burned areas with high, medium, or low fire severity are better sites for planting nursery-grown aspen seedlings, and (ii) whether a nursery drought treatment is effective in increasing the outplanting survival of these seedlings. Co-advisors: Dr. Karen Mock

 (  https://t.co/KK4FlHJPb8   ) and Dr. Yocom.

Ideally, students will start in the summer of 2021, have two field seasons, and finish in the spring of 2023. Students are expected to work with land managers, lead efforts in the field, analyze data, and publish their work in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

They will have opportunities to present their work to diverse audiences, including managers and the scientific community. Candidates should have earned a BS in a field related to forestry or ecology; highly-qualified candidates with degrees in other fields will be considered.

Preferred qualifications include quantitative skills, writing skills, and field experience.

To apply, please email the following to Larissa Yocom (larissa.yocom@usu.edu) and Karen Mock (karen.mock@usu.edu):

1) a cover letter describing your experience and interests (including which position you are applying for), 2) a CV or resume, 3) unofficial transcripts, 4) GRE scores, and 5) a list of three professional references and their contact information.
