Job Searching : Tips and Tricks on Getting your Dream Job!

He applied to 300+ jobs in 2013 and got rejected from all of them. Two years later, he was in final rounds at Microsoft, Google, & Twitter.

The result? An offer from Microsoft with a $70k+ raise.  some of the nine (9) steps, He used to make it happen.

1. Understand Who Companies Really Hire.
He used to think the most qualified candidate got the job. That's not true. Companies don't hire the most qualified candidate. They hire the person they believe will deliver the most value.  His new goal? Be that person.
2. Choose 15 Target Companies
To illustrate value, He had to narrow his focus and stop applying to random jobs online. Instead, He made a list of 15 target companies.
Then aimed to learn everything he could about: - Their goals - Their challenges - Their major initiatives
3. Find 150 Prospects
He knew he needed a referral. An internal advocate would help him skip the line and maximize his value. So he made a list of 10 contacts at each company. He aimed for potential hiring managers and teammates. 10 contacts * 15 companies = 150 total contacts.
4. Start Making Contact
He didn't ask for a referral upfront and made his initial outreach about the other person: - Engaged with their content - Recognized career transitions - Asked for advice and followed up with results After a few touchpoints, he then asked for a call.
5. Identify Opportunities For Value
He used these calls to perform discovery and ask his contacts about: - Their journeys - The biggest challenge their team is facing - The six-month goals for their team
look for any opportunity where he could illustrate tangible value.
6. Research, Research, Research With his potential opportunity in hand, he will start researching.  His favourite tactics were:
 - Surveying customers/prospects - Performing competitive analyses - Gathering credible industry data Then he will prepare my pitch.
7. Crafting A Pitch Deck
He packaged his pitch in a short slide deck and introduced the problem/opportunity and backed it up with industry data.  Again
shared 2-3 ideas or solutions with an execution plan. Then sent the deck to his contact and asked for a referral.
8. Examples of Ideas For Google, he created a personalized pitch strategy for a potential client. For Twitter, he shared 5 ideas for monetizing their existing audience. For Microsoft, he surveyed SMBs and turned the feedback into a strategy to help Microsoft Ads reach more SMBs.
9. Referral + Value = Opportunities Now, he was walking into interviews with 2 things: 1. A referral from an internal advocate 2. A clear, tangible illustration of my value that directly related to the company's goals The focus was on that, not my non-traditional background.
10. Landing The Offer In the end, Microsoft extended an offer and he officially became a Partner Manager at Microsoft Ads. That job took his total compensation from $70k / year → to $130k / year. All without “traditional” experience and without applying online.
These strategies can be replicated everywhere.
You’ve gotta drill down your favourite companies, network, and get referrals. It’s possible for you!

Meet Princess E. Yeboah- a Rising Ghanaian Model & Youtuber

Princess Evelyn Yeboah is a young talented model, writer, entrepreneur and YouTuber. Princess attended Primary school at Tot- to-Teen School, Adenta-Accra. She continued her High School education at Purpose Girls Christian International High School, Gbawe- Accra. She was the first Head Girl of the school and furthered her tertiary education at the University of Ghana, with Public Administration as her major. Princess is currently undertaking her mandatory national service at Burma Camp – Legal department in Accra.

Her childhood beginnings, families and friends used to say, because of her physique, cuteness and beauty, she should be a model when she grows up. She recalled, she went to an event with her mother, people then asked whether, she was born overseas- the skin, manners and her accent. The mother jokingly replied by saying- she was born right here in Ghana.

Her Modeling journey

The journey of her modelling started around June 2020, when she took a picture with her friends’ phone and posted it on Instagram and people started liking it. A photographer directs messaged her that he likes her hair, and want to have a photoshoot session with her. Already, Princess has liked and commented on his works- Ram studios. During her first shoot at Ram studios- she was nervous but Ram was surprised because of the kind of posting style she was giving. The pictures came in, it was beautiful. She showed it to her mother. The pictures went viral for a month in countries such as Nigeria, the USA, and other Asian Countries and also on Pinterest. Due to the comments, she got from people, she started with Face Modeling – due to her facial beauty. Again, her photographer linked her to a modelling company- Apricot. She rocked in the clothes and decided to add Fashion Modeling. Later on, her photographer recommended her to a brand company- Ihairbeautysupply, they into hair, which made her add commercial modelling too.

She did a bridal shoot by Claras Makeover and was photographed by creative vision photography. The pictures went viral and got featured on bellanaijaweddings.com and Pinterest. She wanted to develop herself; she joined Malex Agency in 2020 for a contract of one year. So, she can be groomed and polished her modelling skills. She further added, since she joined the modelling industry, it has helped her to be very ambitious and explored her to different places, which has helped her to improve upon herself in terms of her skills and the modelling industry. She stated that Ghanaian models should be paid very well.

Her Entrepreneurial journey

She was waiting for her University of Ghana admission and an idea came into mind, why not start something to earn some money. She went to YouTube to watch videos on how to make Samosa. After watching, she bought a few ingredients at the market. The first Samosa didn’t go well; she didn’t give up, kept on practising and became perfect. To sharpen the skill, she enrolled at a catering school for a month to learn Samosa and Spring Roll making. After graduation from the catering school, she was now a pro in Samosa and Spring Roll making. She had a few contracts from banks, restaurants, families and friends orders. She has a dream for her business and wants Princess’s Crunchy Snacks to be around the world.

Her Blogging and YouTube journey

She wants to be an inspirational writer to encourage people. While waiting for admission at the University of Ghana, she enrolled at Soronko Academy for 3 months, where she was thought how to create a website. This skill, she gained from the training made her start writing on her blog site. Most of her writings and quotes were based on her personal life experiences. She was writing on the Bondage series. She realized most people don’t like reading. So, she was like, why doesn’t she turn her writing into a vlog so that people who do not like reading will watch on YouTube channel that birthed Princessca Yeboah YouTube channel- a channel that creates content about  Princeca diaries, travelling, beauty, fashion, lifestyle, and modelling.

One of her ambitions is to travel around the world. She loves travelling and is a natural person who loves a clean environment. Oprah Winfrey is her mentor, she looks up to most. She aspires to become one of the greatest women who will bring change to the world by influencing the world positively through her talent. She is inspired by Oprah Winfrey’s quote: Passion is energy. Feel the power that comes from focusing on what excites you. She believes that, if one takes that risk to make his or her passion come alive there is nothing that can stop him or her except she or he decides to give up.

Nia Menerville is the founder and CEO of The Loc God, a natural hair-care brand with $7,131,637.50 in sales from November 11, 2019, to March 1, 2022.

She didn’t have a smooth start. She started out styling hair terribly in an African hair braiding shop at age 17. Again, she started off doing her own hair and that of her mother’s hair at home. Eventually, she had the opportunity to work in a hair braiding shop and did hair for 3 years.

Nia started her own product line Loc God Products when she was 19 by perfecting her skills.

The product line became very popular, and at 20 years old, (As stated in the caption of this photo) below (https://twitter.com/Niathelocgod/status/1328699457173647360?s=20&t=oHT1Qg9oESN2a3bIkjkB4w this was January 2020. The product line was already up and running for 3 months and had just started making enough for her to quit doing hair and pursue his dreams as a CEO of The Loc God.

She eventually got her own salon suite as a stylist but didn’t want to be a stylist forever.

https://twitter.com/Niathelocgod/status/1328702045461819393?s=20&t=oHT1Qg9oESN2a3bIkjkB4w

This is the salon suite she decorated and painted the wall and everything by herself. This was the start of her product line and eventually launched it online on Nov 11th 2019.

The very first launch was in November11, 2019. The company sold 90 bottles. It was sold out in 45 minutes. The company grossed about $1,600. This was the actual footage of her in her mother’s house

https://twitter.com/Niathelocgod/status/1328702787602018309?t=xhsozvsaA4YhKcVtc902mg&s=19

Today just about 3 years later, they have reached $7,131,637.50 Million in sales, a 6,400 sq. foot warehouse, 2 salon suites and 13 employees in total and still at 22

Nia Menerville story is so huge. It shows that it does not matter how you start, it matters how you continue to do it and get it done.

8 Questions A Good CV Must Answer

I review CVs almost on a daily basis. Hardly will a week go by without having a chat or interviewing candidates. Truth is one cannot see all the candidates but your CV gives you a leg in the door.

The word ‘Curriculum Vitae’ has its root meaning from a Latin word which means ‘course of life’. Your CV is a snapshot of who you are and what you have done.

It is a summary of your background, experience, education, achievements, awards and other activities that may be taken into consideration when looking for a job. In other words, your CV is you without your physical presence.

When an interviewer or prospective employer peruses a CV, there are certain things they are looking out for. Getting what they’re looking for or otherwise can determine whether you get a look in or you’re looked over.

There are 8 major questions a good CV must answer.

1. Who are you?

A good CV must answer this question by giving the basic information such as the name of the candidate, phone details and e-mail address as a minimum. Including physical address is no longer required because of security concerns.

A good CV should also have a brief bio that is well written and original.

2. What have you done?

A good CV speaks to 3 major items here: Educational history, work history and personal attributes. Your list of degrees should be stated including the ones you are still pursuing.

I personally prefer the reverse chronological order- describing your most recent first before previous ones.

Do the same for your work history. Be very specific with your experience especially those that are applicable to the role you’re applying for. List your achievements.

It is important to include other forms of experience. If you served in a leadership capacity, please include it. I once interviewed a lady and I was drawn to the statement on her CV that she served as the Vice President of the Students Union Govt during her undergraduate days.

She was interviewing for a sales role and her leadership skills came in handy. When I was younger, I always include in my CV that I was the President of the Students Union Government when I was an undergraduate student. If you served as a volunteer anywhere, please include it.

3. What do you like?

Your CV should reflect your areas of interest. I should be able to read your CV and see a pattern for those who are well experienced. What are your hobbies?

4. BWhat skills do you have?

You should clearly state the skills related to the job role applied for. Don’t wait for a physical or virtual interview to mesmerize the panel. Let them be able to pick up your CV and decipher where you fit in.

There are 3 major types of skills- Transferable, employability and technical skills. If you’re a specialist in an area, state it. It’s also a good place to state the languages spoken. The more languages you can speak, the better your chances of being hired.

In the first part, I stated 4 questions a good CV must answer. Your CV is the first thing a prospective employer sees before seeing you.

Oftentimes, many employers have formed their impression about the candidate based on their CV even before the in-person interview. Let’s look at the remaining 4 questions.

5. What are your achievements?

One achievement clearly written on my CV is when I handled a transaction for a former employer and the ticket was the biggest size in Africa that year. If that career achievement will make you look more competitive and it’s genuine, write it down.

It could be an individual achievement or a team one. List your major achievements on each role you have had. If you have awards or commendation letters, include them.

I got two commendation letters signed by a former employer and they are listed on my CV. I even laminated the letters.

Any honours conferred on you? Fellowships? Registered patents? List them.

6.What have you written?

The more you rise in your career, the more interviewers begin to look at your soft skills more than the hard ones. At this stage of your career, your competence is no longer in doubt. People now interrogate your soft skills more closely.

Consequently, interviewers are willing to discuss such things as books you have authored so as to have a window into your personal world view. If you’re an author of any papers, texts or books, include them on your cv. If you contribute regularly at panels or seminars, indicate.

Thought leadership takes centre-stage the more you rise.

7.Where do you belong?

Write down the professional organizations you belong to. List the social an service clubs you belong to also. If you held offices, clearly indicate them.

I have been interviewed once and the mention of my secondary school gave me a leg in the door because the person who was interviewing me that time also went to the same secondary school.

It was a very interesting interview as both of us sang our school anthem during the interview. Of course, I got the job. If you belong to Rotary Club and you write it on your CV, the prospective employer might just be a Rotarian. Put down anything that can give you an advantage.

8.Who will vouch for you?

This is a bit controversial as a school of thought says that references can be submitted upon request. I personally think otherwise from experience.

I interviewed a young fellow some years ago and I saw the name of my former Head of Department during my undergraduate days as one of the candidate’s referees. Right in his presence, I called him to give me a character recommendation of the candidate.

The recommendation was phenomenal. Sometimes, the references become the decider especially when you have many good candidates and you can’t take them all.

Use fonts that are very readable, especially Calibri, Century Gothic, Times Roman or Arial. Use only one type of font throughout. There are no hard and fast rules about the number of pages, however precision is key.

When I started to apply for jobs after graduation, I thought the type of paper used and style of CV will have an impact on the interview process. I later found out that the substance of the CV is what matters and not the style or the type of scented paper used.

The content is more important than the layout. Nevertheless, packaging and presentation makes it appealing.

Don’t ever submit photocopies of your CV. Recurrent photocopying makes it fade and illegible.

Good luck!
